FARMINGTON — A bag exchange promoting a fresh start for the new year ended with a donation of about 16 handbags, some gently used, some new, to Work First's Touch of Class Too on Broadway on Thursday.

When the Vera Bradley line of cotton, quilted handbags offered customers a discount on a new handbag if they brought in a used one from Jan. 9 to 13 there was a nice show of local participation, Emily Hartung of Calico Patch in Farmington said.
The idea of bringing in their used handbags was to create a new start for someone else, she said. Some were gifts received over the holidays that just didn't fit the recipient's style so some brought in a new handbag. A variety of handbags were accepted, she said.
It was Calico Patch's turn to pass them on to a local organization, especially one that promotes women, she said.
The Work First Inc. thrift shop has a goal of providing employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities who attend Work First.
"It was nice for everyone," Hartung said as she brought the "fruit of the store's labor" to the thrift store that offers quality used clothing in three locations, two in Farmington and one in Jay.
Hartung expressed her intentions to continue doing something similar, although the Vera Bradley promotion was over.
As Hall looked over the bounty of bags of varying shades and materials, Hartung said the motto for the handbag line is "be colorful," creating a glimpse of spring on a chilly winter day.
