New Sharon town meeting voters choose new road commissioner

NEW SHARON — About 150 voters elected a selectman, road commissioner and an RSU 9 director at Saturday's nearly six-hour annual town meeting at the Cape Cod Hill Elementary School.

Paul Mills was elected moderator.

In elections from the floor, Selectman Forrest Bonney was re-elected, this time for three years, he said by phone early Saturday evening.

Bonney previously completed a term formerly held by Larry Donald, who resigned during a town meeting in 2011, when voters attempted to reduce selectmen's pay.

Robert Adams Jr., Dennis McCourt Jr. and John Pond were all nominated for the only contested race — that of road commissioner. The seat was formerly held by Donald Lowe.

Pond won the one-year position. Bonney said there was considerable discussion about changing the position to a four-year term, but that would have to be done at a meeting in the future.

RSU 9 Director William “Bill” Reid won re-election on the School Board. Additionally, Town Clerk Rose Mary McCormick, Treasurer Bonita Tompkins and Water District member Lloyd Perkins were all re-elected.

Bonney said he didn't yet know what was approved as the municipal budget or the amount to be raised by taxation.

He did say there was considerable discussion on most of the warrant's 47 articles.

One such article, which asked voters to consider transferring $6,800 from the Fire Station Reserve Fund to replace floors at the fire station, was approved, Bonney said.

During discussion, however, talk shifted to constructing a community building that would house a fire station and new town hall, and finding money to finance it, he said.

An article to see if voters would raise and appropriate $5,200 to buy the TRIO Motor Vehicle registration software, was approved, Bonney said.

Mr Larry Donald, stepped down to take Sandy River General Store back over, the salary dispute was the year before which took place during town meeting and he never submitted a signed resignation and retained 3rd selectman till he stepped down last year to run the store again.....
