FARMINGTON — A celebration and championship ring ceremony was held Friday to honor the Mt. Blue Cougar football team for winning the Maine Principals Association's Class B State Championship last fall. The gold ball came back to Farmington for the first time in 32 years.
Players, parents and coaches gathered at Mt. Blue High School for a meal and presentation of the rings. One by one, the names were announced and the players presented with their personalized, championship ring and patch for their letterman's jacket.
Players and coaches also signed footballs brought by players and parents.
After the meal, Coach Gary Parlin congratulated the team and thanked the parents for their assistance over the past season.
Since winning the Class B State Championship, the Cougars have made appearances throughout the local communities and state. Most recently they visited the State House in Augusta where the team met with Gov. Paul LePage.
State Sen. Tom Saviello of Wilton presented legislative sentiments Friday to Parlin and Jordan Whitney and Bradley Jackson, the offensive and defensive players of the year.
"Team Mom" Betsey Hyde thanked the parents and donors in the audience, as well as the community for supporting the team all year.
A highlight film of the season was played, and culminated in cheers and tears as the final scene was dedicated in memory of Lt. Col Mike Backus, a Mt. Blue football supporter and father of one of the players.
