Driving down Lisbon Street in Lewiston recently, I noticed Lewiston Public Works employees taking down the "holiday tree" in Dufresne Plaza. Now, if that is truly a "holiday tree," not a Christmas tree, why was it taken down prior to the New Year's Day holiday?
Roger Couturier, Greene

Does it really matter?
Before I begin this I will tell you I do call it a Christmas tree. That being said, what does it matter what my neighbor or my boss or anyone else calls it? They all have a right to call it what they wish just as you and I do. Religion is a very personal thing. Some people embrace it, some discard it and others either don't know or don't care what they think of it. And you know what? Everyone of those people are correct because they all practice what they believe in. A true Christian would respect that. Also, a true Christian would be secure enough in the their faith to not let something like this bother them. Also, think of the enviromentalists as well who don't call it a Christmas, or Holiday tree. They call it a dead tree and you know what, when it comes to the absolute truth, they nailed it.

Ever notice how at Christmas time it's "Happy Holidays", but at New Year's time it's "Happy New Year". Funny how that works.

The reason is that not everyone celebrates Christmas. But everyone celebrates New Years.

Yes, but if they're saying "Happy Holidays" before and at Christmas, what holiday, exactly, are they celebrating? Don't say New Years, because they don't start saying Happy New Year until AFTER Christmas.

Go ahead, keep pushing this "war on Christmas" crap. All you're going to do is push Christmas out the door. The Supreme Court already rules in "Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School District v. Grumet" that the Government(from Federal to state to local) cannot favor one religion over another. So if it's a Christmas tree, then they will have to put up a menorah, all the stuff from Kwanzaa, a Statue of L Ron Hubbard(Scientology), ect...
So Instead of having to deal with that mess, they will take the same tact that schools do, and allow none of it.
So go ahead, keep pushing

It's a real gray area. At some point, the Government might have to address the differences between the religious and cultural holidays.

Grey area or what ever you want to call it...........it's still a "Federal Holiday" And on the same philosophy, the Government has to address the point that "We have a spending problem". I would think it to be a much higher priority !

I agree that the government has far bigger issues. I didn't waste my time writing to the editor to harp on this.
