T. Nazar: He's done it again

Just when you need another reason for a recall option with constraints, Gov. Paul LePage hands it to you on a silver platter.

"If you don't give me the cuts I demand, I'll close the schools." He didn't say exactly that, but, close enough. He did say he'll close the schools unless the Legislature dances to his tune.

That's called blackmail.

We now have even more proof that being a business person is not a guarantee the individual knows how to govern.

But for the cowardice of politicians on both sides of the aisle, we'd have the recall option. Cynthia Dill proposed it with statewide support from voters. It would not have been aimed at LePage as conservatives claimed. The process of amending the Constitution would have taken longer than LePage has left in office. It would also have had constraints so that it could not be used lightly — simply to reverse the outcome of an election.

But, Debra Plowman, R-Hampden, majority leader in the Senate, would not even let it get into committee; not even be talked about. That's how much she feared it. She claimed it was a waste of time, unlike the decision to make whoopie pies the state fat pill.

Talking to politicians about this issue is a bit like tilting at windmills. But, if we keep nagging, maybe, just maybe, we’ll get their attention.

Accountability is not a dirty word.

Tony Nazar, Wilton

Recalling an official

I believe the law in Maine states that an official who breaks the law can be impeached and I think that is sufficient. I don't think an official should be recalled because they make unpopular decisions Sometimes this is just plain necessary for the good of all. I do, however, think we need to update the way we elect our officials. Now that out of state interests can legally and anonymously dump millions of dollars into a campaign at the last minute to influence our elections, it is even more imperative that we elect them with a majority vote and that we have transparency in campaign financing. We need to find out where this money is coming from before, not three months after the election. Anyone who thinks those millions of dollars do not buy influence is kidding themselves.

We have ample proof that

We have ample proof that being a career politician is not a guarantee the individual knows how to govern. Consider this snip from a very recent speech:

With or without this Congress, I will keep taking actions that help the economy grow.

Keep? Right. This is blackmail on a much grander scale. But, of course, the ends justify the means.

If I knew what you were trying to say....

If I knew what you were saying, I might agree with you, but then, given your track record, we'd both be wrong.

I would suggest that liberals

I would suggest that liberals get over having lost the last election and move on. Conservatives have had to stand by and watch the liberal democrats basically strangle the State with expanded entitlement programs for three+/- decades, and now we are flat broke and the Federal Government is as well, so no help from D.C. We need to cut spending by hundreds of millions of dollars, and since DHHS and schools consume most of the state budget, where else are you supposed to look for significant cuts? Oh wait, I forgot, we don't have to cut any programs, just raise taxes, that always worked before! What a joke!

Any recall measure would not

Any recall measure would not affect the governor, any court would rule that as ex post facto law. But still, I'm hesitant of any recall provision, because you know that some entity, like the MHPC would finance a recall petition for any and all politicians it doesn't like. I like the idea of a recall, but first I would like a constitutional change to require a run-off if any candidate doesn't get a majority in any election. It would make tolerating them more palatable.

"I like the idea of a recall"...
Sure, as long as it is applicable only against republicans.
