M. Larson: Tarred and feathered

I left the “Capitol for a Day” gathering in Lewiston on Jan. 19, realizing that the forum simply gave the governor and his commissioners an opportunity to justify decisions they had already made, rather than to listen to the concerns of citizens.

The governor repeatedly used the term “welfare,” instead of the less provocative, yet more descriptive and accurate terms Temporary Assistance to Needy Families,

MaineCare or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, and he did so to great effect. His cheering section loved it.

How far are we, really, from someone being tarred and feathered for simply needing help?

The Republican Legislature succeeded in pushing a tax-cut package last year that has left the state with dwindling resources to pay for the shared responsibilities of a civilized people. Those responsibilities include making sure that all among us who are ill, disabled, elderly, hungry, homeless or who simply work at vital yet low-wage jobs will not be forgotten.

According to House Minority Leader Emily Cain, 55 percent of the costs of MaineCare are incurred by just 5 percent of the population. Why not try to more efficiently manage those costs?

It appears that the administration prefers to nuke the whole system instead, ignoring the far-reaching implications.

It is clear the governor still believes, in spite of any solid evidence, that hoards of people are coming to Maine simply to live off what he deems an overly generous welfare system. His credo must be: “Never let facts get in your way.”

Mary, Let me speak candidly

Mary,
Let me speak candidly about another point of view. Many families are squeezed between rising costs, flat or reduced salaries, and the ever present treat of increasing taxes. We simply don’t what to pay anymore to support others for doing so is taking from our families.

Remember that those who fund your brand of philanthropy are human too, and we all have limits to what we are willing to pay in taxes. Gov. Lepage is simply reflecting the shifting tide of the welfare state and the tax and spend philosophies.

You are more than welcome to open your wallet a bit wider; no one will stop you.

I was at the Lewiston city

I was at the Lewiston city building yesterday on business for all of 15 minutes, and in that time going to the second floor and back, I passed by a young man in his early 20's and a young couple appearing to be in their early thirties all decked out with baggies and lip and nose jewelry carrying their appropriate paperwork for public assistance. Since the assessor's office is adjacent to the welfare office, it's easy enough to know what business these folks were transacting. Anyone that thinks people don't come here for the welfare has their heads in the sand. BTW, sugar coat it all you want with fancy names, it's still public assistance, i.e., welfare.

Did they have the obligatory

Did they have the obligatory toddler in a stroller with them?

huh?

So, nose jewelry and baggies mean they are able bodied adults just looking for a free ride? There couldn't be any other reason, right?

Job hunting

Mark, maybe what he means is that if they'd remove their hideous piercings and put some "looking for a job" cloths on instead of "ain't no point in looking for a job" cloths on they'd stand a chance of becoming productive members of society by getting a job instead of relying on the rest of us for a free lunch.

Ronald, So what you are

Ronald,
So what you are saying is that the Governor is an advocate for childhood obesity?

On the one hand, we constantly hear new about the epidemic of childhood obesity.

On the other hand, we constantly hear how cuts in welfare are increasing food insecurity – a term that I find hilarious in itself.

The Governor could both

Perhaps the Governor could both solve 'Childhood Obesity' and 'Hunger in Maine' by submitting a 'Modest Proposal'.....

Ronald, Ah, Modesty is

Ronald,
Ah, Modesty is subjective; therefore, the measure of a “Modest Proposal” is in the eye of the beholder (i.e. what does one gain or lose).

Likewise, this whole business of measuring “food insecurity” is subjective. Federal guidelines for measuring “food insecurity” are based on a survey of questions that focuses on emotion. We both know that basing a conclusion on emotion is not good science.

Where is the science behind the data? Where is the measure of caloric intake? What foods do the “poor” spend their money on? Could they be making better choice with the money they have? Where is that data???

A simple survey of emotion does not provide the correct picture. How many deaths in Maine during 2011 were contributed to Malnutrition? Compare this with the percent of Mainer’s that are classified as obese tells a completely different story in my opinion.

What is the story then?

The theme of the story has more to do with politics and money than science, the truth and compassion.
