T. McManus: Figures tell a tale

Gov. Paul LePage was in Lewiston on Jan. 19 and the Sun Journal made sure that readers knew that some of the citizens there were wearing the 61 percent buttons, indicating that 61 percent of the voters had not voted for LePage in the 2010 election.

Congratulations to the entrepreneur who thought of it. I have seen bumper stickers to that effect, too, so someone is making money.

When I first saw them, I must confess that I thought they referred to the 2006 election, when 61 percent of the population did not vote for John Baldacci.

Then I checked my figures — it was 62 percent of the electorate who did not vote for Baldacci in that election.

My mistake. Silly me.

And your point is?

Whyizzit that Republicans always point at a Democrat when one of theirs is criticized and vice versa. Those wearing the 61% buttons were doubtless more upset with LePage's strutting and posturing, especially in the first weeks after the election. Think Kiss My Butt, stolen art work, and little mustaches...

He's slipped back into it again now when their is the slightest dissent with his demands. He's going to close schools. LOL

We didn't elect LePage by 90% of the vote. He needs to realize that and stop acting as though he received a mandate..

FWIW - I'm no big fan of the Baldacci administration either, but that's more for policy reasons than because he bullied people - which he didn't.

The Maine Constitution does need to be amended. To require 50.1% and to provide for recall after the office holder has had a year. The latter to should also require significant voter signatures to go to a ballot. with te year and the number of signatures required, recall would not be abused.

you are correct, Terry, and

you are correct, Terry, and that is why a change to the constitution is in order to require majority elections in Maine. It is not longer acceptable for a plurality to rule, majority must rule. Otherwise we're stuck with a lepage for four years, when it will take decades and countless deaths to fix what he ruins.
