J. Baird: Taking a wrong path

Having graduated from the Good Will-Hinckley school in 1963, I am saddened at what is going on up there.

The school opened in 1889 as a home for boys. Later on, it accepted girls. Officials sold the high school and plan to refurbish a building that has been closed since at least 1963. That makes no sense to me.

Back in 1963, Allen Vickers became headmaster. He decided GWH should be a prep school. All sorts of buildings were built and others torn down. Vickers ran the school into the ground.

In 1991, my late husband and I went up to see the school. The place had been closed for at least two years then. Harold Alfond came to the rescue. I believe Mr. Alfond has bailed out GWH at least three times.

I do hope that this time, state officials will keep a watchful eye on what is happening with the state’s money. Even with this latest donation, I wonder if the board will be more financially responsible than it has been in the past.

I have withdrawn my support from GWH. It is sad that school officials have sold off a large portion of the campus just to stay afloat, diminishing the founder’s dream of a home for boys and girls.

I do wish the school well, but I don’t approve of the path officials are taking.
