As a lifelong independent, I have tried to never make generalities about Republicans or Democrats. As in any group, large or small, political or otherwise, different opinions arise. Some based on facts, some on faith and some, even, on habit. So, I try not to draw conclusions or make decisions from isolated instances.
I did find myself somewhat taken aback, however, when I passed a sign located prominently in front of the new Republican headquarters on upper Lisbon Street. It read, "Help us defeat Obama." Not the Democrats, not finances or world leadership; not anything related to politics ... just defeat Obama.
First of all, in regard to his high office and common dignity, he is President Obama. And, secondly, and most important in my mind, is that the sign is only a very thinly veiled racist metaphor. They don't want to change presidents; they want to get the black man out of the White House.
Will we ever learn?
Dick Rosenberg, Sabattus

WHHHAAAATTTT?
Mr Rosenberg, please explain why it is racism. The goal is to get him and his policies OUT of the White House. If any President had his policies, I would want him/her gone regardless of skin color.
YOU, my dear sir, are the racist for reading that into it. That's been part of the problem from the beginning of his campaign. If any person opposing his policies spoke out, they were labelled a 'racist', including myself, a gay white conservative (fiscally, at least). But my reply was always "I will prove you wrong. I would vote for Condoleeza Rice any day. Woman and black all in one". I am NOT a racist and that sign does not express any racism either.
It's the Little Boy that Cried Wolf syndrome you have.

I don't see how that sign expresses racism, veiled or otherwise. After stating that you don't generalize about Republicans or Democrats, it seems like that's exactly what you're doing. Obama (yes, that's what he uses on his own signs) is the incumbent candidate. So that's who we are trying to defeat. Why must it be stated any differently? It's his policies and character that are what the majority of his opponents object to. I suppose there may be some who object to the color of his skin, but I haven't met any within the Republican party.

... compared to the Democrat trash littered all over the country in 2004. And it was simply "Bush" - common dignity was nowhere to be seen.
That said, Obama is doing a great job of defeating Obama. My advice to Republicans:
Never interrupt your opponent when he's destroying himself.

Judging by the content of his letter, one might conclude that Mr. Rosenberg may be blind to everything obama stands for except the color of his skin. Anyone who sees racism in "Help us defeat obama" can only be a "thinly veiled" racist himself.
