I raised three children in Maine in the 1970s; when my children were young, I did not have to worry about the use of BPA — a toxic chemical — in baby packaging products. Now, however, with young grandchildren in Maine, that worry has settled on me.
Some progress has been made to ensure the health and well-being of our little Mainers; the Maine Board of Environmental Protection is considering the rule to phase BPA out of baby and toddler food packaging. If this occurs, our lawmakers will vote on this vital public health decision.
Now is the time for all of us who live in and love this beautiful state to contact our representatives and ask them to support this rule to phase BPA out of food packaging so that our children and grandchildren, and their children in the future, may enjoy life in a healthy environment, something those of us who are a little older once believed was a natural and human right.

Timeline: BPA from Invention to Phase-Out
1891: BPA is invented. Chemists synthesize the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in the laboratory.
1976: First law to regulate industrial chemicals, fails to establish safety of BPA.
It had been around a long time, even in the 1970s. The author must have missed the 1976 law which "grandfathered" BPA, along with 62,000 other chemicals.
