W. Oldham: Misinformation abounds in Peru

Correspondence from the Maine Municipal Association regarding a then-proposed political activity ordinance, dated April 2012, was withheld from the people of Peru.

It stated that if the employees in elected positions at that time were to be protected, then wording needed to be changed in the ordinance, otherwise the ordinance would apply to them when passed. It passed and Selectwoman Kathy Hussey remains in two positions — in direct violation of the ordinance.

Those who have been working "for the people" have been publicly accused of having a vendetta and holding secret meetings. They have been called liars, gold-diggers, bullies and horrible monsters.

Truth is that misinformation comes only from the town office itself.

Hussey should have stepped down. Three out of five selectmen have squelched the will of the people.

The public hearing on Feb. 11 was a joke. People left, including two selectmen, because the moderator clearly stated she would not direct any questions to the selectmen.

On Feb. 19, two of the selectmen made it clear that the person responsible for the fiasco on Feb. 11 was in the wrong and overstepped her authority by going over the board of selectmen.

Selectmen Dick Powell and Ed Ferland were uninformed of the format for that Feb. 11 meeting; they didn't know they needed prepared statements and were only prepared to answer questions. They were as surprised by the meeting's format as the citizens were.

Peru has never had an outside moderator. For public meetings and hearings, we elect our own.
