TURNER — The Chick-A-Dee Restaurant on Route 4, which has specialized in fried seafood for 77 years, has closed.
A sign on the outside of the restaurant Wednesday afternoon said: "We are sorry to say we have been forced to close our doors due (to) the tough time in this economy. We would like to thank all of you for your patronage."
Attempts to reach owner William Hird Sr. or to get information from his sons, William Jr. or Greg, who at one time operated the restaurant with their father, were unsuccessful.
An employee at the Chick-A-Dee Restaurant in Lewiston, owned by William Hird Jr., confirmed the Turner establishment was closed but deferred comment to Hird Sr., who was not available.
The popular restaurant was opened in 1935 by Francis Donovan. Hird Sr. and his wife, Anne, bought it in the early 1970s. A fire destroyed the restaurant in June 1991, but the family rebuilt and expanded the building, reopening in October of that year.

Will be missed
The Turner restaurant was the better of the two: the service and quality of food.
There was always a good # of folks that would go there on a regular basis, and our local snowmobile club would have a club dinner there every year.
Heard it was more about family issues than cost to keep the place going.
Seemed to shut down quite abruptly for a usual going out of business situation.
Their lobster stew will be missed.
Someone really needs to open it back up. I would in a heartbeat, but haven't won the lottery yet.

A sad day. I really think that the opening of the Chick A Dee of Lewiston had a lot to do with the closing. Many of the Chick A Dee's customers in Lewiston/Auburn didn't want to bother with the drive to Turner, and started going to the one in Lewiston. I figured this would happen sooner or later. The Lewiston parking lot is always packed, and when I would drive by the Turner location it was always empty. I have lots of fond memories of going to the Turner restaurant, especially taking my mom there for her birthday or Mother's Day.

One in Turner was great. Food and service excellent. The one in Lewiston, will NEVER go back to. VERY poor service, food was cold and drink was so watered down.
