Standoff ends in Turner; man charged

TURNER — A local man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after holding authorities at bay for nearly 14 hours.

John Hunnewell, 67, was taken into custody at 2 a.m. Tuesday and charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office.

A statement from Sheriff Guy Desjardins said Hunnewell was taken to an area hospital "for a medical condition that is believed to be nonrelated to the incident."

The standoff between Hunnewell and police started about noon Monday after the Sheriff's Department received a call that Hunnewell threatened another person with a shotgun. When deputies arrived, Hunnewell barricaded himself inside the residence at 1630 Auburn Road.

Witnesses at the scene Monday night said Hunnewell rented a trailer about 100 yards down a wooded road on the property, which surrounds Richardson's Station, a garage on Route 4.

Hunnewell had no hostages, but was believed to be armed.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service and Turner Rescue. The Maine State Police Tactical Team was also on hand and took Hunnewell into custody before turning him over to the Sheriff's Department.
