A Lewiston police officer interviews witnesses to a possible stabbing near the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul late Sunday.
LEWISTON — Police were on scene late Sunday night at what was reported as a fight and possible stabbing in the neighborhood surrounding the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
But investigator's first priority was to find the victim.
"We think somebody might have been stabbed, but we've got nothing," Lewiston police Sgt. Randy St. Laurent said. "No victim. No suspect. No nothing."
St. Laurent said the fight was reported at 10:21 p.m. on Horton Street near the parking lot across the street from the Basilica. The caller said there were around six people involved in the altercation. Everyone — including the alleged victim — had dispersed by the time authorities arrived.
St. Laurent said officers were searching the surrounding neighborhood for a victim who might be in need of medical attention. He said both hospitals in town had been contacted and made aware of the situation, but as of late Sunday neither had reported any stabbing victims in their emergency rooms.
Investigators closed Horton Street between Ash and Sabattus streets and were going over the area. A dog team had also been called in to help search for parties involved in the fight — both a victim and a suspect.
St. Laurent said that as of late Sunday night, investigators were still trying to determine exactly what happened. In addition to searching for those involved in the altercation, police were also interviewing witnesses.
"Right now, we don't know if it's a stabbing, a fight or what it is," St. Laurent said.
