Three boys rescued after canoe capsizes Sunday

LEWISTON — Two 12-year-olds and a 13-year-old were rescued Sunday afternoon by the Lewiston Fire Department after a canoe they were traveling in capsized in the Androscoggin River.

According to the Lewiston Police Department, the call came in about 12:53 p.m. Sunday. The boys apparently rented a canoe from Lewiston Auburn Canoe and Kayak Rentals Co. in Auburn and paddled in the Androscoggin River, where they lost control and the canoe flipped over.

All three boys were wearing life jackets, according to police.

The police reported all three boys received medical attention as a precautionary measure. No adults were present with the boys, according to police, adding the three were believed to have rented the canoe on their own.

Business owner Jeff Parsons, who is also the owner and operator of Bethel Outdoor Adventure & Campground, was not working at the Auburn location on Sunday and said he needed to check with his staff about the incident.

Parsons said the rental company has a policy that an individual must be at least 18 years old in order to rent a canoe and children must be accompanied by an adult.
