LEWISTON — A local man was being treated for head and leg injuries Friday after he was struck by a van while crossing Cedar Street.
Police said Walter Lade, 64, was crossing the intersection at Cedar and Lincoln streets at about 10:30 a.m. when he was struck by a van driven by Kevin Mitchell, 18, of Lewiston.
Lade's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
That assessment came later in the day. When the victim was first struck, police believed his injuries had the potential to be fatal. They called in a reconstruction team from Maine State Police to assist with the investigation.
The busy intersection was partially blocked to traffic for hours as state police investigated.
A hospital official later told police the victim was expected to survive his injuries, which include a possible broken leg and a head injury.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation Friday night.
Police said Lade was leaving a corner store and walking to Hope Haven Gospel Mission on the other side of the intersection when he was struck.
Thank Goodness!`
Thank goodness the driver of the van did the right thing and stopped. We are still waiting to hear who the driver of the truck was that killed my nephew back in October.
