Michaud hosts forum to arm elders against fraud

AUBURN — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud will bring a group from the Federal Trade Commission to Clover Manor Thursday to talk about protecting elders from fraud.

The community forum, "Being Scam Smart: Protecting Your Money and Identity from Fraud," is scheduled from 10-11:30 a.m. at Clover Manor, 440 Minot Ave.

“Whether it’s Medicare fraud or fake lottery scams, Mainers are being targeted,” Michaud said in a written news release.

According to the release, Michaud was inspired to create the forum after meeting with a Maine victim of a phone scam in 2012.

Topics are scheduled to include Medicare fraud and medical discount plans, identity theft, robocalls and telemarketing, charity and fundraising fraud, credit offers, sweepstakes and buying club memberships.

“The variety of fraud and the lengths these criminals will go is simply unconscionable," Michaud said in the written statement. "I’m hopeful this forum will provide Mainers with the knowledge they need to avoid becoming a future victim. Increasing prosecutions and raising public awareness is crucial to reducing these types of crimes moving forward.”

According to the statement, Michaud is scheduled to be joined by representatives from the Federal Trade Commission, Maine Attorney General Janet Mills and staff from the AG’s Consumer Protection Department, Betsy Balderston Elder Services for the State of Maine and Betsy Sawyer-Manter, executive director of SeniorsPlus.
