LEWISTON — The Maine Community Foundation, through its Androscoggin Fund along with the People of Color Fund, has recently donated $12,000 to help empower immigrant women.
These Somali Bantu women, seen here farming, were participants in a self-help program sponsored by the Somali Bantu Community Mutual Association of Lewiston/Auburn aimed at helping immigrant women adjust to their new culture.
The grant will provide for self-help classes for adult women coordinated through a Lewiston nonprofit, the Somali Bantu Community Mutual Association of Lewiston/Auburn (www.SBCMALA.org).
Under the grant, Somali Bantu women meet weekly in several locations around Lewiston-Auburn. In their classes they work on their English-speaking skills, learn math, computer literacy, citizenship and household budgeting, according to Bates College Anthropology Department Associate Professor Elizabeth Eames.
The meetings help immigrant women in the Somali Bantu Community learn to adapt in a new culture and overcome a long history of gender and ethnicity-based disadvantage, Eames said.

Here we go again with the poor Somali, they get more press then the President or our dear Governor, how about doing something about the mothers out there that have spent all their lives struggling to raise their American born kids and do it well. Were is the help for those women and the stories about we the people that have endured long here with our fathers and mothers what of those struggles. NOT POOR ENOUGH That being said at least someone is helping them learn English and since someone is putting up the money besides the tax payers guess I should say good deal. Question where is this grant money coming from? The Maine Community Foundation, through its Androscoggin fund. Sounds like we are paying anyway.
