Snowshoe race goes on thanks to Nemo

Bradbury White Out snowshoe race participant Sara Kozer is all smiles as she nears the half-mile mark to the finish line Sunday at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. "Getting the snow was lucky," Ryan Triffitt, race director, said. "On Tuesday, I emailed registrants and thanked them for their support. I let them know we would be going ahead with the race, but that it might be a trail run if there was no snow."

POWNAL — While winter storm Nemo was an inconvenience for many, for the Trail Monster Running Club it saved the day, making it possible for the club to host its White Out snowshoe race.

Ryan Welts, right, stays just seconds ahead of Scott Hornney while racing the Bradbury White Out snowshoe series Sunday. Welts took first, and Hornney was one second behind him.

Race Director, Ryan Triffitt had been preparing to change the race to a trail run as of Tuesday, but word of the impending storm restored hope for the participants.

"We needed about two feet of snow," Triffitt said, "and that's what we got."

The three-race annual series, now in its third year, was expecting the largest field of racers in its history, with most racers registering early in the year.

"It definitely takes a leap of faith in the weather and the director as well," Triffitt said.

With the snow arriving on cue, Triffit said a volunteer had to go out early yesterday to try to pack down a 3.5-mile trail that wasn't flagged until before the start Sunday.

Triffitt was happy with the coincidence that brought his much-needed snow. Within the Trail Monster Running Club, he is nicknamed Snowman. His birthday fell on Friday with the arrival of Nemo.

The storm name is just a Weather Channel thing, so you're only giving them free publicity when you go along with it. Fun story though
