Sabattus man wants every resident to own a gun

Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

David Marsters is proposing an ordinance which mandates every Sabattus head of household to own a gun.

SABATTUS — Retiree David Marsters says there ought to be a law which mandates every Sabattus head of household to own a gun.

Georgia guns

David Marsters is proposing an ordinance which mandates every Sabattus head of household to own a gun.

He’s not joking.

If each Sabattus home had a gun, “it would provide and protect safety of the city,” Marsters said.

When the selectmen meet Tuesday, March 5, they will hear his proposal on how to reduce crime — the same way a Georgia town did.

“I’ve been reading about a Georgia town, Kennesaw,” Marsters said during a phone interview Monday. “Since 1982, they’ve had an ordinance requiring all homeowners shall be armed and ready to go at all times,” Marsters said. Since they mandated every home have a gun, “their crime rate went down.”

Marsters is right about the gun law in Kennesaw, a city not far from Atlanta.

On Kennesaw’s website, the city brags about “The Gun Law.” The Georgia city made headlines after May 1, 1982, “when the city unanimously passed a law requiring every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition,” the website reads. “After passage of the law, the burglary rate in Kennesaw declined, and even today, the city has the lowest crime rate in Cobb County.”

According to Marsters, felons, those with a history of mental illness and those whose religion would prohibit gun use would be exempt. He acknowledged “there’s not that much crime rate in Sabattus,” but if word spread that every home had guns, robbers would stay away out of town.

Marsters, 68, is a retired police officer from Malden, Mass. He’s a father, a grandfather, and is involved in his local politics, serving on several committees.

When he first moved to Sabattus three years ago, there were some nearby break-ins, he said. He took action. “I threatened neighbors,” households with adults who were “druggies,” he said. “I forced certain kids to move.” That helped end break-ins, he said.

When asked about those calling for more gun control and fewer guns after Sandy Hook, Marsters chuckled. He insisted more guns don’t bring more violence. Sandy Hook “is being used for political games,” he said. The Second Amendment and other rights are being threatened. “If people don’t smarten up,” rights like reporters covering the news will be taken away, Marsters said.

Marsters is hoping his proposal will be accepted by selectmen and placed on the town warrant for citizens to decide at the annual June town meeting.

Town officials, however, are predicting the proposal will be shot down.

Town Manager Andrew Gilmore agreed. “Compelling someone to own a gun is a new one to me in post-Colonial times,” said Gilmore, predicting selectmen will not support the proposal.

Individuals ought to “have a right to choose not to own a gun,” he said, adding that more guns could attract criminals to Sabattus.

Since a New York newspaper went public with which local households had concealed gun permits, there have been more robberies, Gilmore said.

“If we announced to rest of world every home in Sabattus had a weapon, it would be easy pickings. I’m not sure if law is constitutional.”

Police Chief Anthony Ward agreed. The Second Amendment provides a right for gun ownership, Ward said, but residents “shouldn’t be dictated by government to have weapons. Some people are not comfortable with them,” Ward said. “It would make an unsafe environment.”

He is opposed, he said.

The selectmen’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Typical power-hungry cop who has all the answers

This guy should never be allowed to own a gun. I would say he is one of the mentally ill who should have a psych exam and sent back to Massachusetts. If everyone has to own a gun, how many kids are going to get shot? How many domestic violence battles would end up with at least one dead? Not everyone wants a gun and not everyone has the need for power to shoot anyone who might knock at their door. Look at the facts, Marsters. More people get shot when more people have guns--especially when they don't know how or when to use them. It's almost worth buying a print of him for target practice. Almost, but not quite. Why did you retire in Maine? Massachusetts wouldn't have you anymore??

Police Academy's Train, gun clubs extort...

Nancy,
This guy wants everyone to have a gun, but when applying for his job as a police officer and those cadets are evaluated and tested on all mental and physical aspects of doing the job. One is the psych evaluation of being fit to carry a use a weapon. Those that graduate from police academies have the training and the stability to enforce the laws and use brutal force if necessary.

Now his kind wants every untrained, uneducated and many many unstable persons to asses a situation, own and use the weapon at their decision of a given moment with other by standers in that area. All I know is that any innocent person that is shot or killed by those that want to play Deputy Dawg are sued to the fullest extent and sent to jail for a long time.

So now he and others like him want to put a gun in everyone's hand and let them be the judge, jury and executioner like in the Wild West. All I can say is those that live by the sword, die by the sword and good for them. Maybe if enough people are asked to show their permit to carry or conceal and they refuse and then the police should be called on them having a weapon, and let them deal with the law and the hassle. As far as I am concerned any person other than a law officer or a solider carrying a gun is a potential threat for your safety and mine.

Jerry - My guess is when he joined (and about the time I did)

The only 'Psych" Test was: "Are you 'Psyched Up' to go out and do this Sh*t??"

They had some real 'Knuckle Draggerz' and Political Hacks on my P.D. - not to say that at least the Knuckle Draggerz don't come in handy at times.

Here's a good expose in the Chicago Tribune about a Chief of Police who eventually got indicted on a 'State Job' - they quote some guy named 'Riml' in it..... It's an 'Oldie' (four pages of it)

Old man I would say you are over stepping your territoriality and you should be considered a terrorist and a bully and a threat for intimidating taxpayers, all upon your judging and threatening people. Unless those folks have been arrested, you have no rights to to take actions and threaten anyone. That is what makes people like you with a gun unpredictable and dangerous.

For the ladies

Statistically speaking a woman is 500% more like to end up shot if she lives in a home with a gun than one that doesn't. So if a woman sees herself as ending up like Mrs. Lanza, or the Pistorius girlfried or one of the thousands of domestic murder suicide scenarios and not as Laura Croft chasing down bad guys it's only because she has common sense enough to read the odds. The last thing a Maine town needs is a bunch of vigilantes who think someone made them KIng or Rambo.

"Statistically speaking a woman is 500% more like to end up shot if she lives in a home with gun than one that doesn't."
That may be true, but I don't believe that the gunless abuser, wife beater, whatever you want to call him, would be deterred much if he can get his hands on a knife or a blunt instrument. They're going to do what they're going to do.
P.S....are you by any chance a GOT fan?

Have government force gun ownership on all town citizens? Next thing you know, government will be forcing people to buy health insurance or face a penalty. What's that you say? It's already happening? Well, I'll be.....

I'm sure that there are

I'm sure that there are already plenty of armed residents in Sabattus. There is no need for this law, and no need to advertise who is and who isn't armed. The right to bear arms is exactly that, a right, and so should be the right to not bear arms, if someone so chooses.

If there were 'Break-Ins' as he said - those weren't 'Robberies' - those are Burglaries - and he should know better.

He needs to find a hobby. And guns aren't it.
