Masked student causes scare at Oak Hill

SABATTUS – An Oak Hill High School student will be disciplined and officials may review the school's lockdown policy following a scare Thursday afternoon.

School officials said in a statement to parents Friday that a student who ran into the building in black clothing and a ski mask meant it as a prank. But the incident prompted an angry response from at least one parent, and school officials say they understand.

The incident was not reported to the police, although the masked student was asked to leave, school officials said. The scare occurred after regular school hours while some students were being tutored.

Principal Patricia Doyle, in a letter to the parents of high school students, said the student entered the building through a main door and ran up a ramp near the auditorium.

Other students were said to be "extremely frightened" by the appearance of the masked teen.

"As administrators at Oak Hill High School and RSU4, we take incidents like this seriously," Doyle wrote, "as we know that they have the potential to affect the emotional well-being of your children."

Rick Gowell told WMTW News 8 that his son was in the school Thursday when the masked student entered and started chasing students. He is upset, he said, because police were not contacted and the school not locked down.

Doyle said she and Assistant Principal Andrew Carlton are working with Maine State Police and others to ensure that proper safety procedures are in place. The school board has been notified, Doyle said.

The principal met with all the students involved in the scare, she said, to stress that safety remains a top priority.

"I have also asked them for their diligence in reporting behaviors that they feel may be harmful," she said.

Doyle said school counselors are available to any student who wishes to talk about the incident.
