Class C Football: Overhaug, Yarmouth overwhelm Bucksport

PORTLAND — With two touches of the football Saturday afternoon, Anders Overhaug matched the maximum number of touchdowns Bucksport allowed in a game all season.

It only got more startlingly one-sided after that.

Overhaug reached the end zone six times — four rushing, one receiving, another on a kick return — and Yarmouth bagged its second straight Class C football championship in a 41-14 rout at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Yarmouth (12-0) posted its second straight undefeated campaign and denied Bucksport (11-1) its first state title since 2004.

Like last year’s 34-6 thumping of Stearns, it was never in doubt. Overhaug scored on Yarmouth’s first and third plays from scrimmage, covering 25 and 20 yards.

He ended a longer drive with a 2-yard grab from sophomore quarterback Brady Neujahr on fourth-and-goal for a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

“You hope. You coach for it. But it doesn’t happen like that very often,” Yarmouth coach Jim Hartman said. “I didn’t expect this.”

Bucksport’s glimmer of hope — a 1-yard TD run by Shawn Smith with 8:29 remaining in the half — was extinguished by Overhaug’s 91-yard special teams salvo.

Overhaug (11 carries, 113 yards) capped the Clippers’ next series with a 30-yard score and tacked on a 1-yard TD in the third quarter.

The senior has been the leader of Yarmouth’s Wing-T attack with more than 1,700 yards, despite being benched for a game late in the regular season.

“He’s always on our (butt) all the time, always after us,” Overhaug said of Hartman. “It makes us better and I love him for it.”

Smith (21 carries, 89 yards) and Josh Gray (a 52-yard TD run in the fourth quarter led the Golden Bucks. Bucksport lost quarterback Mike Cummings and center Cody Gray to injuries on the same play late in the first half.

Bucksport limited explosive Little Ten Conference foe Orono to 14 points in two meetings this year, including the Eastern C title game.

But the Bucks furnished few answers for Overhaug, Matt Woodbury (57 yards), Caleb Uhl (49) or Neujahr (47).

Yarmouth elevated its program to varsity status in 2007. After losing 19 of their first 20 games, the Clippers are 32-1 since.

Ten seniors played their final game, including Overhaug and standout linemen Ben Weinrich and Jacob French.

“I know it’s going to end sometime. I’ve been preparing that speech for a while,” Hartman said. “I just hope people realize how great these kids are and what they’ve accomplished in a short period of time.”
