BOWDOINHAM — A Wales man has been arrested and a Lewiston man is sought by police after a burglary earlier this month that was interrupted by a homeowner, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department.

Sagadahoc County Chief Deputy Brett Strout said 24-year-old Thomas Lemay of 107B Eastern Drive in Wales was captured shortly after the alleged burglary by officers who happened to be nearby. He was being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on a charge of burglary. Ryan Letourneau, 27, of 733 Lisbon St. in Lewiston was still at large and is the subject of an arrest warrant for burglary.

Strout said a homeowner on Fisher Road in Bowdoinham reported the burglary at about 1:30 p.m. on May 8 upon returning home and finding the suspects there. Lemay fled in a white Ford pickup truck, and Letourneau disappeared on foot into the woods. The rear door of the residence had been kicked in and two televisions sets and some jewelry had been left behind when the burglary was interrupted.

Sagadahoc County Deputy Steve Thibeault and Detective Chad Carleton, who were at the nearby Bowdoinham Fire Department at the time, found Lemay on Babes Way. Lemay was backing up rapidly in an attempt to avoid being seen, according to a press release. He is being held on $15,000 cash or $50,000 surety bond, according to an officer at the county jail.

A police dog was unable to find Letourneau in the woods because of heavy rain, said Strout. Officers from Topsham and Richmond police departments assisted in the search.

Further investigation revealed that the two suspects, who have been staying in Lewiston lately, were involved in multiple other burglaries in Lewiston, Auburn, Durham and the New Gloucester area. Maine State Police, along with the Lewiston and Auburn police departments, have recovered numerous stolen items, including televisions and other electronics. The suspects targeted unoccupied homes in secluded areas and forced open back doors taking mostly jewelry and electronics. Strout said he believes this was their first attempted burglary in Sagadahoc County.
