Man finds skeletal remains near Portland trail

PORTLAND — Police are investigating after a man picking blueberries on Hutchins Drive discovered skeletal human remains Saturday afternoon.

The man found the remains in a wooded area near the Portland Trail System around 4 p.m., Lt. Scott Pelletier said Monday. Hutchins Drive is located off outer Congress Street.

“It looked like bones wrapped in a blanket or something,” Pelletier said.

Police are working to identify the person, whom they believe is a female, according to Pelletier. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday.

“The autopsy will give us a better idea if there was any trauma,” he said.

An anthropologist and a State Police cadaver dog assisted in searching the area, Pelletier said. Police suspect the body has been in the area since last fall.
