U.S. Reps. Pingree, Smith to tour BIW

BATH (AP) — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine is bringing the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to Bath Iron Works for a tour.

Maine Democrat Pingree and Rep. Adam Smith of Washington plan to tour BIW and a Navy ship under construction there on Thursday.

Pingree, who's also a member of the House Armed Services Committee, says she wants Smith to get a first-hand look at a modern and efficient shipbuilding facility.

The congresswoman says the future of shipbuilding funding is at issue because the Budget Control Act could mean substantial, mandatory cuts in government spending starting in January.
