Gay marriage opponents prepare yard signs

PORTLAND (AP) — Gay-marriage opponents are preparing to distribute campaign yard signs expressing opposition to a Nov. 6 ballot question asking Mainers if they want to legalize same-sex marriage.

The Protect Marriage Maine opposition group says thousands of yard signs will be distributed to referendum opponents.

The yellow-and-blue signs will read: "Don't Redefine Marriage. Vote No on Question One. Marriage (equals) One Man + One Woman."

This is the second time in three years that Mainers will vote on the issue. Voters in 2009 repealed a same-sex marriage law passed earlier in the year by the Legislature.

"Legalize" is incorrect language

I don't know whether I will use one of these signs or get a local sign shop to make one that just says "No on 1." I'll have to take a look at what's being distributed. (In 2009 I declined to use signs that advertised Marc Mutty's organization and just had my own sign made.) But at least the signs being distributed identify the issue correctly: it is whether we want to redefine the word "marriage." We can't in fact do so, since words get their meaning from usage, and "marriage" is a much wider used and much older term than the state of Maine. But at least they are right that redefinition is what we're being asked about.

"Legalize" is ridiculous. Same-sex marriage isn't illegal -- or did I miss the story in which someone was fined or thrown in jail for it? "Same-sex marriage" is just a misuse of the English language.
