Gardiner offers free rent to bolster downtown

GARDINER (AP) — Businesses that move into empty storefronts in downtown Gardiner are being offered two months' worth of free rent.

The business development group Gardiner Main Street, landlords who own the space, and the city are collaborating on the program known as Project Pop-Up in the hopes of revitalizing the downtown.

Patrick Wright, executive director of Gardiner Main Street, said the goal is not just to fill the space for November and December, but to attract long-term tenants.

The City Council voted last month to waive any applicable fees for businesses accepted in the program through Jan. 1.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Gardiner Main Street received one application from an art and craft store as of Friday, but Wright says he's heard interest from a few other businesses.
