PORTLAND (AP) — The Casco Bay Ferry Lines board has given final approval to a $3 million renovation project along the Portland waterfront.
The project will double the size of the terminal and upgrade the pier where five ferries dock.
Ferry officials say they are responding to passenger demand.
General Manager Hank Berg told WCSH-TV long lines form in the summer. The terminal was built 25 years ago to handle about half a million passengers per year, but now handles twice that.
The most noticeable change will be the new waiting room, which will double in size to 6,000-square feet, and will allow passengers to watch the boats.
The project is being funded with a federal grant so there will be no ticket price hikes.
The terminal will remain open during renovations.
