BIDDEFORD (AP) — A Massachusetts supermarket chain has announced its first expansion into Maine.
Biddeford city officials said Tewksbury, Mass.-based Market Basket is scheduled to open a store next fall.
Economic Development Director Daniel Stevenson told The Journal Tribune the family-owned company plans to invest $11 million to redevelop the former Lowe's store at The Shops at Biddeford Crossing. The building has been empty since Lowe's closed in 2011.
Stevenson said the store will bring up to 150 full-time jobs and hundreds of part time positions.
Market Basket has 69 stores in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Market Basket
It is about time that Hannafords, Shaws and others will have good competition. I use to live in Mass and always ahopped at Market Basket. You can't beat the prices or quality of food. Congrats to Market Basket. I live in Sabattus and I will travel to Biddeford to do my major shopping. In time I know they will come this way. Big commercial plans for Rte 9 in Sabattus.

The house on corner of 126 and 9 has been sold and a big gas station convient store, car wash dog shampoo is going in ther like the one in Lewiston on 196. I forgot the name of it but it just opened. They wanted the space where Sabattus Auto is 0n 9 and Maine pike but the owner refused to sell as he knows it is worth a lot more than than what was offered. Once comprehensive planning is done and zoning put in, Rte 9 Sabattus will be a lot off commercial going up. Big truck stop for rte9 and Maine pike is in the works. Maybe a Christmas tree shop would go good on this road.
