BANGOR — A driver distracted by his cellphone struck a snowbank and utility pole on Saturday evening, flipping his van onto its side and snarling traffic on Broadway in the area of the Interstate 95 offramp, according to police.

Justin Maynard, 26, of Eddington drifted to the right while driving north on Broadway, Sgt. Bob Bishop said while reading from a police report filed on Sunday. Just after passing the I-95 south offramp, Mynard’s 2001 red Dodge Grand Caravan struck the snowbank and then a utility pole, flipping the car onto its driver’s side at around 6:30 p.m.

The car’s right front tire had snapped off, and was hanging underneath the car.

Moments after the crash, a Bangor Hydro vehicle happened across the scene and blocked traffic in the lane until police, firefighters and paramedics arrived. Several bystanders also stopped to help.

Maynard was not injured in the crash, and managed to climb out of the vehicle, Bishop said.

Police directed traffic around the accident scene, slowing cars on Broadway and backing up traffic on the interstate offramp. The accident also snarled traffic trying to come off Center Street.

A wrecker arrived on scene and flipped the vehicle upright, drawing applause and a few cheers from onlookers at the nearby Irving gas station, before towing it away.

Crews cleared the scene by 7:30 p.m. after sweeping up debris left behind by the crash.

Bishop said no charges have been filed in connection with the crash. He said Maynard was insured.
