Jury convicts Hayden in New Gloucester murders

PORTLAND (AP) — A Maine jury has convicted a Massachusetts man in the killings of the mother of his four children as well as a longtime friend in the town of New Gloucester.

Witnesses in the trial of Joel Hayden of New Bedford, Mass., included his 8-year-old son, who was 7 when he witnessed his mother being gunned down in July 2011.

The 31-year-old Hayden was accused of killing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Renee Sandora, and his childhood friend, 28-year-old Trevor Mills, of New Bedford, at Sandora's home. Afterward, Hayden led police on a high-speed chase.

Evidence included a 911 call in which Sandora could be heard saying "my boyfriend just shot me." Hayden's attorneys told jurors DNA evidence points to another possible killer.
