Elvin J. Bryant

SOUTH PARIS — Elvin J. Bryant, 89, of Auburn, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Maine Veterans' Home, following a long illness.

He was born Feb. 1, 1922, in East Machias, the son of John and Clara (Pope) Bryant. He graduated from Washington Academy, East Machias in 1939. Upon graduation, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Mooseboro National Wildlife Refuge near Calais, until he enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army Medical Corps on Oct. 2, 1940.

During his military career, he became a commissioned officer in the Medical Service Corps and later in the Airborne Infantry. He retired on March 31, 1963, with the rank of major, having served in numerous assignments that included duty in the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Germany. After his military retirement, he worked for 19 years at Pioneer Plastics in Auburn.

He was an active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Auburn. He was also a member of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni, Military Order of the World Wars, life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Commercial Travelers.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Beverly of Auburn; three sons, Scott and wife, Claire, of Falmouth, John and wife, Judy, of Hickory, N.C., and Brian and wife, Diane, of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Jeffrey and wife, Demi, of Boulder, Colo., Kacie Gough and husband, Brett, of Pembroke, Mass., Tracie and fiance, Bobbie, of Frisco, Texas, Jonathan and wife, Karen, of Denver, Colo., Adam of Washington, D.C., Travis and wife, Moira, of Hickory, N.C., Lori and fiance, William Russell, of Lynchburg, Va., and Ryan Rivera and fiancee, Nicole, of Austin, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Finley and Carley Gough, Kendall and Delaney Bryant, Fairen Craven, Jenna and Owen Bryant and Avah Figueora.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, William; and great-granddaughter, Reagan.
