Ruth M. Toothaker

AUBURN — Ruth M. Toothaker, 91, of Weld, died late morning on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.

She was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Dixfield, a daughter of John Thomas and Ethel Mae (Vining) Clemens. She attended Weld schools. In 1933, she married Lamont R.G. Toothaker at the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church in Jay.

As a young woman, Ruth worked at Parker’s Mill in Weld and later at Kawanhee Inn Weld as a housekeeper, as well as other various camps and cottages around Weld.

She enjoyed gardening and being in the outdoors. Sometime in her 70s, she was awarded a trophy for taking the largest deer in the state of Maine. An avid scrapbooker, she loved taking newspaper clippings from local papers and keeping records of current historical events.

Ruth is survived by her three sons, Edward Toothaker of Fryeburg, Garfield Toothaker of Falmouth and Richard Toothaker of Weld; her siblings, Ruby Gillmet of Farmington, Nel Robinson of Falmouth, Edna Hutchings of Peru, Phillis Gerrier of Industry, James Clemens of Old Orchard Beach, Alfred Clemens of Carthage and Gordon Clemens of Old Orchard Beach; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; four stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1998; an infant daughter; and siblings, Richard, John, Vernal “Spike” and Cecil Clemens, Bernice Roberts and Shirley Daoust.
