William E. 'Willie' Martin

RUMFORD — William E. “Willie” Martin, 87, of Waldo Street, Rumford, died Monday, Sept. 10, at the Rumford Hospital.

He was born in Rumford, Jan. 18, 1925, the son of Fidele and Phoebe (Poirier) Martin, and had attended Rumford schools.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 68th General Hospital.

Willie worked at Oxford, Ethyl and Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Rumford until retirement after more than 36 years in 1987, as a general helper in the Craft Mill.

He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius-St. John Church; Boise Cascade Paper Co. 25-year Club; Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion; Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW; LeParesseux Snowshoe Club; and Rumford Falls Aerie 1248, FOE.

He was married in Mexico, Dec. 15, 1962, to Marie C. Turbide, who died in Rumford, Sept. 6, 1999.

Survivors include stepdaughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Chickering of Dixfield; many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Murphy of Rumford.

He was predeceased by brothers, Freddie, Louis, Anthony and Sylvio Martin and a sister, Marion Marquis.
