Mexico panels to begin budget work

MEXICO — Selectmen and the Budget Committee will meet at 6 p.m. March 15 at the Town Hall to begin formulating a spending plan for 2012-13.

Town Manager John Madigan said he plans to keep the municipal budget about the same as the current one, which is $2,844,615. The current tax rate is $23 per $1,000 valuation.

Once a final budget figure is adopted by selectmen, residents will vote on it in June.

In other matters, the board:

* Set a public hearing for 6 p.m. Feb. 28, at the Town Hall to hear comments on a plan to apply for a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant. If the funds are approved, the town plans to continue its ongoing road work to repave/reconstruct Main and Alder streets, as well as install sewer and water pipes.

* Approved a request by Frank Anastasio to hold an antique auto cruise night on May 31 at the rear of the Town Hall. Proceeds will benefit the Mexico Fireman's Relief Association.

* Appointed former Norway Police Department officer Holli Pullen to the Mexico Police Department.

* Awarded a three-year contract to Archie's Inc. for the disposal of recyclables and solid waste at a cost of about $57,000 for the first year, $58,000 for the second year, and $59,000 for the third year.
