Driver in Bridgton fatal crash identified

BRIDGTON — The victim of a fatal car crash last week has been identified as 17-year-old Austin J. Sloat, a senior at Lake Region High School. The teen died of injuries associated with the crash.

At 2:15 p.m. Sept. 5, Sloat was driving alone on Kansas Road toward downtown Bridgton when he left the road, hitting a tree, according to a published report. Kansas Road runs along Long Lake and is near Lake Region High School.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department has reconstructed the crash and continues to investigate it. The Bridgton Police Department said speed appears to be a factor, but the investigation is expected to take weeks.

According to the Bridgton News, a second car was impounded in the investigation.

"He had an infectious smile," Sloat's obituary in the Bridgton News said. "He was always rooting for the underdog, and always took care of his friends. A lot of people considered Austin their 'best friend.'”
