SUMNER — Seven volunteers braved brisk winds and chilly temperatures Saturday morning to mend the fences around the Upper Sumner Hill Cemetery.
This cemetery, high atop Sumner Hill with a view of Mount Washington and the White Mountains, was founded by settlers in the early 1800s and is still used by old Sumner families. Veterans from most of our nation's wars rest among friends and relatives in this historic, scenic setting.
Bob Runes, husband of Sumner Town Clerk Susan Runes, led the crew that installed new posts, straightened the fence and made repairs. Volunteers for the fence repair project included Paul Ackey, Jim Durfee, Lee Henwey, Jim McCarthy, Andrew Poland and Chris Zak, in addition to Runes.
