Fishing shack unloaded in Harrison

Leslie H. Dixon/Sun Journal

Jim Allen, left, and his son Adam, both of Bridgton, unloaded their fishing shack at the boat ramp on Long Lake in Harrison on Monday afternoon. Jim Allen, who has been fishing on the lake since the 1970s, said they placed the shack closer to the shore than usual because they were not sure of ice conditions farther out in the lake.

I don't understand something......

There are still three snowmobilers missing from a week or so ago, a fourth recovered a week or so ago, and warm weather predicted into the weekend. By his own account, the ice conditions are questionable. What is the draw? Why do people tempt fate, in the pursuit of that elusive fish.
I like fishing to, not ice fishing, but I do use my boat a lot. If the lake is still frozen on April first, I don't launch my boat just because it's fishing season. Being on the water requires responsibility. Waiting until the ice has the time to properly freeze, is responsible. Placing my ice shack, hopefully on safer ice, is putting others in danger. Those that are going to have to come out and retrieve you when your calculations prove wrong. I met a guy in Turner a while ago, he was doing the same thing. "Keeping it close to shore, the ice is sort of iffy", as he put it. Two days later, you guessed it, he had his pick up right next to his shack. Just two "warm days" after worrying about the weight of his shack. What don't I get??????

By the way, the guy in Turner, couldn't park his truck on land, and walk the thirty feet to his shack.....
