DIXFIELD — A faulty trailer hitch may be to blame for an accident that destroyed a telephone pole on the Canton Point Road on Sunday.
Jamie Milledge of Dixfield, owner of JDM Excavation, said he was driving a dump truck north on the Canton Point Road in Dixfield when an empty trailer he was hauling detached from the truck.
Milledge said the trailer headed toward the woods and slammed into a telephone pole. He said he was not injured and was thankful the trailer didn't go into traffic.
"We were very lucky. It could have been a lot worse," he said.
Milledge said he believed the trailer became unhooked because of a faulty welding job.
Dixfield Fire Chief Scott Dennett said they responded to the accident at approximately 12:50 p.m. He said with the assistance of Canton Fire Department the road was closed down for just under an hour due to downed power lines.
Dennett said Central Maine Power removed the wires and damaged pole. He believed only one house lost power during the incident.
Milledge said the trailer was not heavily damaged in the accident.
