Rumford man injured in collision Sunday in Mexico

MEXICO — A head-on collision Sunday afternoon on Main Street sent one man to Rumford Hospital and a car and pickup truck were damaged beyond repair, police said late Monday afternoon.

Randolph Angotti, 18, of Rumford, complained of neck pain and was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to the hospital where he was treated and released, Lt. Roy Hodsdon said.

The other driver, Richard Legere, 53, of Lovell, wasn't injured.

Hodsdon said Legere was driving a 2010 Toyota pickup truck west in the 25 mph zone by Med-Care's building at 3:32 p.m. when glare from the sun obscured his vision.

The truck crossed the center line and headed toward Angotti's oncoming 1998 Mercury, Hodsdon said.

Angotti took evasive action.

He drove as far to the right as possible and onto a snowbank before the truck struck the front end and continued down the driver's side, and then went into a snowbank off the wrong side of the road, the lieutenant said.

Hodsdon estimated damage to the Toyota at between $6,000 and $7,000; and $5,000 to the Mercury car.

Two children in Angotti's car were not injured.

Mexico firefighters assisted at the scene, keeping one lane open for traffic, Hodsdon said.
