An Oxford County Special Olympics athlete who only identified himself as Jarod, exhuberantly takes off down the 50-meter snowshoe course followed closely by fellow athlete Mariah Bryant of Rumford and team Dirigo High School on Friday morning during the county's Winter Training Day at Black Mountain of Maine ski area in Rumford. The training meet is a prerequisite for the 130 athletes from eight teams, who will participate in the 44th annual Special Olympics Maine Winter Games on Jan. 27-29 at Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Carrabassett Valley. Awards are to be presented at noon at Black Mountain Ski Lodge. Training sports were snowshoeing, Nordic and Alpine skiing, and speed ice skating at the Hosmer Field Complex rink in Rumford.
