I urge Oxford County voters to reject the recommendation of county commissioners to abolish the elected county treasurer position. A vote “no” on the referendum set for June 8 will result in the voters being able to continue the established practice of electing their county treasurer.
The commissioners have made the ludicrous suggestion that the county’s financial management needs can be satisfied by posting actual and budget figures to the Web and having an annual audit. This is akin to driving down the road by looking in the rearview mirror. A treasurer drives by looking ahead so that revenue enhancements and cost reductions are addressed proactively.
The commissioners are recommending an action that is clearly not in the best interest of the county. A vote “no” on their suggestion would guarantee an independent voice can continue to address the county’s serious financial management issues.
