Parents of man hurt in DUI crash sue bars, others

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The parents of a man severely hurt and left disabled in a crash linked to drunken driving are suing the driver, the vehicle's owner and three bars.

A lawsuit filed by the mother and stepfather of Paul D. Hinerman, 30, of Fairfield, says he "has the mental capacity of a child with nearly complete short-term memory loss, speech impairment and loss of mobility and function," resulting from the crash and has faced more than $400,000 in medical costs.

The lawsuit also targets driver Kenneth C. Brassard, formerly of Albion, who later pleaded no contest to charges including felony operating under the influence and driving after suspension of his license.

It also names Laurie Thomas of Waterville, the owner of the vehicle, and the owners of three bars that served the men.

where does it say that this man was riding Kenneth's vehicle?...It is possible this man was hit by Kenneth while driving his own vehicle, right?
Everybody is quick to say they are sue happy and make really mean comments but did anybody stop and think about the horror these people have been through? They raise there child to be self suffient and all that and then one day a terrible accident happens and the result is that they will have to take care of their adult "child" for the rest of his life. By the sounds of it he will require special care... that takes money and if they dont have it how do you all expect they will take care of him?.....Any one of us could be in their situation and we shouldnt make assumptions and pass judgement without knowing all the facts.

Perhaps you should do a little research before you open your mouth. Get off your high horse...I did it for you.

Yes, it does take a lot of money to care for somebody with these types of injuries. Unfortunately the victim decided to partake in the festivities, so he should be just as responsible as everybody else listed in the lawsuit.

EXCUSE ME JAYLA FOR ASKING A COUPLE QUESTIONS....I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO "DO A LITTLE RESEARCH" TO ASK A FEW QUESTIONS! I STATED THAT PEOPLE ARE QUICK TO ASSUME THEY ARE SUE HAPPY AND PASS JUDGEMENT.....IN NO WAY DID I SAY IF I AGREED WITH THIS LAWSUIT OR NOT.......SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD PICK YOURSELF UP AND ATTEMPT TO GET BACK ON THAT HIGH HORSE OF YOURS BEFORE YOU ATTACK ME......

this says a lot for this man's parents...They are money grubbing and will sue anyone they can to get a few bucks. I'm sure their son didn't have the booze forced on him nor forced into a car with drunk driver.

It's unfortunate everybody is sue happy. I feel terrible for the family and the man who will never live his life the same, but he didn't have to step foot in that vehicle. He made that decision. I really don't see where the owner of the vehicle had anything to do with it. ???
