Veterans days

Today's savings: $9

Maine's Legislature recently passed a law, which will be signed by Gov. John Baldacci on Tuesday, to permit Maine veterans who have been honorably or generally discharged, a free day pass to any of Maine's state parks. The bill was passed as an emergency measure so veterans could take advantage of the free pass for the 2009 summer season, dismissing the usual 90-day wait for bills to take effect. So, as soon as the ink from the governor's pen is dry, the park passes will be available.
What this means is that a veteran who is a Maine resident is entitled to a free day pass to any of Maine's state parks or historic sites. The real savings, though, is that the law expands to allow a veteran's spouse and children free admission if they're with the veteran.
For instance, if a veteran, his wife and three children visited Lily Bay at Moosehead Lake last weekend, the cost would have been $3 per adult, and $1 for each child, or for this family, $9 total. However, if that same family were to visit next weekend, after the law is active, they would get in free.
The same savings is available for this family to visit Wolfe's Neck Woods in Freeport, Sebago, Two Lights, Fort William Henry, Camden Hills and all of Maine's parks as many times as they wish, making every day veterans day in Maine.
