Had enough yet?

Published on Friday, Jul 3, 2009 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Wednesday, Jul 1, 2009 at 3:03 pm 9 Comments
The taxation (Democratic) party has been busy in the state Legislature. Members started with  LD 1088 in March. After their work, the Taxation Committee voted it out with nine Democrats favoring and four Republicans against.
It came to the House on June 4. House Democrats passed it 84-54.
Senate Democrats passed it 19-15 on June 5 and it was sent to the governor. He did not sign it, but held it.
On June 11, the governor submitted his own bill, LD 1495, as a substitute. There was no public or committee hearing. There was no time to read it.
June 11 became a busy day. First, the Republicans tried to send LD 1495 to the voters for a referendum vote. That could have provided time to reasonably study the bill. Democrats defeated that 87-58.
The bill then sped through the House 84-61 and the Senate 20 -13.
On June 12, it was signed into law by the governor. This last minute rush was not good government.
When the bill takes effect, people will see a lot of additional services taxed and price increases. Those not accustomed to charging tax will start taxing.  Middle and low income families will notice it most. Deductions were changed negating a small decrease in income tax.
Consistently L-A Democratic legislators voted “yes”; Republican legislators voted “no.”
The Democratic majority must feed its spending habit. That hand is in the taxpayers' pockets.
Have voters had enough yet?

Mr Shields is 100% correct.

Mr Shields is 100% correct. The Dems have taken a page from the 0bama playbook. Push unwanted legislature through before anyone gets the chance to read and comprehend what is being voted on. It is the only way that they can get their tax and spend agenda passed through. It is the reason the the messiah reneged on his campaign promise of transparency, and his promise to allow any new legislation to be viewed on the internet for 5 days. The libs don't want you to know what you they are doing, they just want your blind obedience. That is why asshats like dan remain their best weapon. An uninformed useful idiot that will defend them no matter what, and attack any who oppose them.

Big Love, dan has never done

Big Love, dan has never done anything constructive. Ignore his posts, they are designed only to gain a response and never actually go anywhere. There is a reason he is ignored and banned on several sites, hinted to only as HWWNBN (He Who Will Not Be Named).

OK, "Tron", you can call me

OK, "Tron", you can call me William, Bill for short. Not sharing personal information in this forum has nothing to do with being ashamed of my position, but more to do with what some fruitcake might do with info about people who have an opinion different from theirs. I refrain from personal attacks and name calling directed at individuals here, as engaing in that activity under a pseudonym is simply an act of cowardice. Your name sounds familiar, Dan. Have you ever run for public office at the local level? Maybe you have some ideas you'd like to share about how we could cut spending. I'd love to hear them. If ever we should meet, rest assured that before the discussion ever turns to politics or social policy, I will have offered my hand and given my name. Big Love

James California's bankrupt

James
California's bankrupt because of those dopey "We The People" vetoes. That's not what we need -- especially after the Republicans had eight years to solve or prevent the fix we're in.
Republicans might not be stupid, but they sure seem to think we are.

Dr. Shields could have

Dr. Shields could have written his letter BEFORE passage of this legislation, if fact this has been discussed for over two years so there was plenty of time for his imput. The SJ is always willing to tout the ultra conservative viewpoint, Channel 13 is notorious for its right leaning reporting. I'm hearing all sorts of Republicans now, but heard absolutely nothing when this was proposed. I just want them to step up to the plate when something can be done.

I noticed you used my real name, big love, and I would have returned the favor. However I noticed that unlike Dr. Shields, you are ashamed to take owership of you opinion. I am not surprised.

That's just one big cop-out

That's just one big cop-out Dan. The Dems control the vote in Augusta. They don't control a few committees or one part of the legislature. They control the House, the Senate and they have their guy in the Blaine House. Where are their leaders? Their ideas, to this point, have been to raise taxes and to cut nothing. They're gutless and they're taking us on a ride down the same road Californians are headed down. Yes, there is a lack of leadership on the Republican side. The lack of quality (R) candidates for governor next election is just one sign of that. But when you don't have the votes in Augusta and the majority isn't interested in your "ideas", then sometimes the only way to be heard is with some sort of citizens initiative; not that those in Augusta will respect the wishes of the people, but at least the Dems have no excuse for not knowing the peoples position before they ignore them, again.

I am getting tired of

I am getting tired of Republicans coming in late and criticizing things and wanting a People's Veto. I wish they would enter the process in the beginning, come up with viable ideas and present them for public discourse. Time and again all the Republicans do is carp about what has been done, and then work to overturn it through a People's Veto. They NEVER offer specific solutions to any of our problems. Vague generalities, like cut spending, lower taxes, but nothing that demonstrates what they want done. Know of waste in government? Point it out. Not vague references to welfare cheats, point it out. Got a better idea about lowering taxes, point it out in the beginning when it will make sense. And if you cut taxes, point out which programs your going to cut. In other words, be involved in the on going process, not be johnny come lately to the whole process.

There is a solution for

There is a solution for their so-called tax reform (a.k.a., LD 1495), and it's called the People's Veto. The petitions are now beginning to circulate, and We The People can defeat/reject this overall tax increase. Don't forget, We The People are supposed to run this state/country, despite what the greedy and crooked politicians want to believe.

While the reduced income tax is a great idea, that does not justify the major expansion in sales tax and lost exemptions. We taxpayers are going to pay more in the end, and that just isn't right. When will our legislators realize we need major spending cuts in state government? This should be done by reducing the amount of wasteful programs and all of the related state jobs. It’s time for these wasteful political games with our tax dollars to stop!

It won't be easy, but it has to be done! If you believe the state should cut spending, come join the solution at Maine Taxpayers United, www.MaineTaxpayers.com
and now on Facebook. BTW, the mission of ‘Maine Taxpayers United’
is to reduce the Maine tax burden and promote prudent government spending. BTW, Here's another good website for us concerned taxpayers of Maine: Citizens Alliance of Maine at http://mainealliance.com.
