NORWAY — The little red 1969 Volkswagen Beetle being raffled off by the Norway-Paris Lion's Club has a new home. Sometime this week it should be parked outside the Sideline Variety Store on Alpine Street or Weltners General Store on Route 117 by the entrance to Lake Pennesseewasee, said Lion's Club member Terry Twitchell.
The Norway-Paris Lion's Club is raffling off the car this year to raise funds for the organization's charitable causes such as eyeglasses for the visually impaired. Traditionally the club has purchased collectible cars like Mustangs each year to restore and raffle off, but organizers said they looked for a more economical model car this year for the club to purchase.
The "bug," as the Volkswagen Beetles were affectionately known, was purchased from a 31-year-old Paris woman who bought it after seeing an advertisement in Uncle Henry's several years ago. The car had been displayed in front of Dad's Place on Main Street but disappeared from that site earlier this week after attending a car show in Harrison over the weekend. The car was actually returned and put behind the Dad's Place building after the store permanently closed unexpectedly on Sunday, according to store owner Linda Larrivee. Raffle tickets are available from any Lion's Club member or by calling Terry Twitchell at Key Bank, 743-6331.
