Slip sliding on snow

KINGFIELD - The University of Maine at Farmington's girls' mentoring program will hold a fund-raising, snow-sliding event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Gilmore Hill.

The girls and their college-student mentors have pledge sheets and are seeking pledges for the four-hour block of sliding.

All proceeds will go to AmeriCares or UNICEF. Since UMF has strong ties to the Sri Lankan community through students it has hosted, all donations raised will go to tsunami-relief efforts, organizers said.

To get to Gilmore Hill, people can take Route 27 north through Kingfield. On the outskirts of town, the Freeman Ridge Road is on the left and Norton's carpet and flooring is on the right. Gilmore Hill is immediately after Norton's, on the right.

The mentoring program - Girls Talk/Teen Voices - is literature-based. Each month, the girls and their mentors read a book, then gather together to discuss the issues raised by the stories. The program also introduces the girls to career options and global issues through monthly guest speakers. They also adopt community service projects and have traveled as a group to cultural events, such as ballets and musical performances.

To pledge a donation or obtain more information, people may contact Kirsten Swan at 778-7347 or Lynne Eustis at 778-7122.
