FARMINGTON - The weather seems primed for this weekend's winter festivities. With an expected foot of new snow, huskies and other bridled bow-wows will be eager for a chance to run.
Although Franklin County Chamber of Commerce's fourth annual Winter Fest officially began with the Special Olympics at Sugarloaf in January, this weekend's dog sled races are another headliner event.
Sponsored by the Downeast Sled Dog Club, events will run for both weekend days and offer several categories. Races in junior, sportsman and pro classes will be run. There will also be events in skijoring, during which sled dogs pull skiers at breakneck speeds.
These canine capers will be held at Sandy River Farm on Routes 2 and 27 in Farmington. There is no admission for spectators.
Also taking place this weekend is a valentine supper and dance sponsored by the Farmington Emblem Club.
The event is $25 per couple for a spaghetti dinner with homemade biscuits and the dance. It will be held at the Elks Lodge on School Street in Farmington.
At noon Sunday, the Northern Lites Snowmobile Club will hold a pig roast including ham, baked potato, peas, carrots, salad, rolls, beverages and homemade pies, according to club secretary Peter Dingley. Held at the Industry town hall, cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 10 and under.
The pig roast has been held annually for about 10 years, said Dingley. It attracts mostly snowmobile riders - about 75 percent arrive by sled from Kingfield, New Portland and other surrounding towns. The club will have signs along the snowmobile trails directing riders to the dinner where people can enjoy a slice from one of about 20 pies baked by event organizer Carolyn Churchill, Dingley said.
The festival events will continue through Feb. 27.
