Overwhelmed by care
I'm the rider of the Arabian mare that crashed through the snowmobile bridge. I'm writing this to express my gratitude to everyone who was involved in a bad day that could have turned out even worse.
I have been overwhelmed with the care, concern and support offered to us (that is,Aquila and me) via communications with the Sun Journal and phone calls to my home. It was not unexpected to hear from my friends and family about our accident, but perfect strangers have called me to wish us well! As an animal lover and advocate, this attention shows me that there are others out there who love animals as much as I. It does my heart good!
I can't thank the Dixfield and Canton firefighter/rescue teams enough. They handled the situation calmly, they looked to me for direction when getting ready to try something, to ask how my horse would handle it. They absolutely were putting her safety first. It was of great benefit that the Canton rescuers had a course in large animal rescue. The Dixfield crew was prompt in getting every tool we thought we would need.
The Sun Journal team reported on our accident with compassion and a lack of sensationalism. Thanks again to all who really cared.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Public schools routinely educate students successfully and send them off to college. If you don't believe me check on the local seniors this spring and see how many there are who are going on. And our local schools do not even meet the NCLB goals! The thing is while public schools have no problem educating students who come to them from stable homes with parents who care about their child's education, their mandate is to educate EVERYBODY. That includes the learning disabled,physically disabled, the homeless, the emotionally disturbed,the language impaired, the unmotivated, the criminals, even those that are absent most of the time. Even with all that, the majority of students are achieving what they need to. Those that are not mostly reflect society's problems which end up dumped into the lap of the public schools. Private schools do not compare any better. Some are excellent and some are awful. Like the public schools. The difference is there is a lot less accountability in the private schools and most of them offer a very narrow curriculum and range of services.

Hey, I throw in 11% that doesn't override the rest of the comment. 11% is huge. That's why I talked about what they have recently done to improve it.
But you reaction is based not on the numbers, but on your assumptions. "Government is overreaching" that's an assumption or better yet your bias. "they are outside their span of control". Again a bias or at best an assumption. Have you tested their "span of control". Do you really know its breath? Based on these two untested and untestable assumptions you reach the conclusion that waste and fraud will continue or get worse." "ObamaCare is simply opens the door to more opportunity" Again a conclusion with no support at all.
You have to know the capabilities of Federal systems and be able to test them to make the judgements you are. When Medicare was implemented Federal "span of control" was very low. A top of the line computer system used tape for I/O. The legislation gave them 6-12 months to implement new features/programs. Current computer systems are thousands of time more productive. Project development techniques are orders of magnitude better. And the Affordable Care Act staged implementation over a number of years. True these systems process millions of transactions per day and thats a real task for any operation. But they have the tools to do it today that they didn't have in the 1960's. The "span of control" today is huge. A medicare for everyone program is very doable. Minimimzing errors is very doable. Checking and preventing deliberate fraud is very doable today (credit card fraud detection is orders of magnitude better than just a few years ago). The Affordable Care Act provides te opportunity to greatly reduce real fraud. Nothing will reduce error too much.
