BETHEL — A huge number of activities highlight the 20th annual Independence Day Festival on Saturday, beginning with food, art and artisans offerings at 9 a.m., and ending with a grand fireworks display at dusk.
The event, sponsored by the Bethel Chamber of Commerce and the Bethel Historical Society, also offers a concert by the Portland Brass Quintet at noon on the lawn of the Moses Mason House, and a performance by acoustic guitarist Jim Gallant at 2 p.m. at the Common Gazebo.
Most events take place on the common, including a mask-making workshop for children led by members of the Mahoosuc Kids Association.
More than 50 artists and artisans will show watercolors, acrylics, photography and other fine arts, as well as pottery, metal sculpture, Maine gem jewelry and other items, said Robin Zinchuk, executive director of the chamber.
Five restaurants will offer a variety of foods, such as pita wraps and tabbouleh, and the Bethel Fire Department will be barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs.
Area restaurants and shops will offer Independence Day specials throughout the day and early evening.
The fireworks display begins at dusk on the golf course of the Bethel Inn Resort.
Business and individual donations provided funding for the day and evening events.
Zinchuck said last year's event drew more than 2,000 people. She expects that number to climb this year because some fireworks displays have been cancelled.
